Hyundai Museum of Kids’ Books & Art (MOKA) presents MOKA Book Art Collection, the first exhibition to showcase its collections. Since its opening in 2015, MOKA has been collecting works of ‘book art’ by Korean and international artists within the two keywords of ‘book form’ and ‘artistry.’ A combination of the words book and art, ‘book art’ refers to works of art that reflect the structural and conceptual features of a book. While books contain stories or information in the form of words and pictures, art expresses the artist's ideas in a specific material. Combined, they create works that are both unique and blur boundaries. The combination of the two concepts manifests itself in artist books with text or images, sculptures that express the form of a book, and conceptual art or performance pieces where the process itself becomes the work.
The exhibition showcases more than 50 artworks from MOKA’s collection, organized into four sections: Hidden Stories, Strange Objects, Unfolding Spaces, and Tinker Tanker Laboratory. The four themes of the exhibition represent the many threads and ways of appreciating book art, from finding a story that needs to be read, to exploring the materials of the book, to expanding our thinking about the space inside and outside of a book, to folding and reshaping the paper ourselves.
Book art comes in a variety of materials, forms, and structures, and it opens up a new way of looking at books. We invite you to discover the unique perspectives of the artists who see the book as an art form and to experience the infinite possibilities of the book.
